You can't afford to get lost trying to keep following the trail, that way you could lose them for good! And you can't risk getting lost trying to return to the cave either. After a minute both you and Toc realize that the tree is at least shelter for one of you.

You grab a branch just above your head and pull yourself up, easily ascending to higher ones. After a few minutes you find a branch 20 feet from the ground so wide that Toc could easily stand atop it without fear of falling, with plenty of room for two. Now if only you could find some vines to make into a sling, you could pull him up into the tree. Calling down to him you tell him what you've found, but he assures you he'll be fine on his own. Looking upwards you can see it's not so far to the next branch, like wise you can see almost a path through the branches to other trees, which could give you a lot more area to search for vines than just above you.
